Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which your body does not make enough insulin, and the insulin that your body produces does not work as well as it should. Your body can also make too much sugar. When this happens, sugar (glucose) builds up in the blood.
It is a prescription medicine used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adult patients with type 2 diabetes
Note: Sitagliptin is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (a condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood).
Sitagliptin is a member of the gliptin class of anti-diabetic medications. Its mechanism of action is through inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), an enzyme that acts to degrade and inactivate glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Sitagliptin works by increasing the amount of insulin that your body makes. Insulin is the hormone that controls sugar levels in your blood.
